Writers write

Sometimes it’s hard to say “I’m a writer.” Sometimes, it’s hard to say anything else.

I write every day. For work, for myself. Long pieces, short pieces. On paper, online and on social media.

I love writing so much, I teach it – and edit others’ writing. Some writers don’t like editing anyone’s work, including their own. I almost enjoy editing more than writing. Almost. Maybe.

As a professional communicator, I write and edit material for different audiences and formats. I’m familiar with a lot of style and citation guides. I work closely with subject experts to understand and ‘translate’ their work to others. From long-form stories, social media copy, technical documentation and training materials for work to personal projects, like a cookbook and a podcast, I write. Every day.

I use the following programs for writing and designing documents:

  • Adobe InDesign (Id)
  • Adobe Acrobat
  • Google Drive
  • MS Word
  • Notepad
  • note-taking mobile apps

Prestage Department of Poultry Science News/Newsletter

As the communications coordinator for an academic department at NC State, I wrote and published news stories for the department’s newsletter.

My articles (opens in a new tab) were posted under News on the department website and then gathered into an email newsletter sent via MailChimp.

Poultry Science Hall of Fame

At NC State, I edited the content and design of the Poultry Science Hall of Fame (opens in a new tab) page. I copy-edited, edited for voice and flow, condensed some content and regularized the information layout. I updated the Hall of Fame page, cleaning up the accordions, adding visual breaks between paragraphs and adding induction years.

CMU Libraries landing page

As part of a complete website re-design, my team created blurbs for each landing page.

CMU About us

CMU Libraries website (opens in a new tab)

My team created the site’s style and most of its language. I created a style guide for the site’s voice as part of the website redesign project.

Ford archival materials

During Spring 2009, I worked as an intern in the Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History (opens in a new tab) at Duke University. My major project during the internship was an online pathfinder for Ford Motor Co. archival materials.

Pathfinders are semi-formal guides that help users find relevant archival materials in a collection (or part of a collection).

NC State Bookstores Policies

I edited, reorganized and condensed store policies to improve readability and establish an single organizational voice.
